Certain illusions are again
predictable in terms of the
theory. If one views an
afterimage of an ellipse by
projecting it on a surface
slanted backward by, say, 45
degees, the elliptical image will
yield a circular shape percept,
as shown in the illustration to
the left. The object cannot look
like an ellipse because this
retinal-image shape is
interpreted on the basis of the
apparent slant in space of the
object producing it. This is
analogous to EmmertΓÇÖs law of
size perception. Of course when
projected on a surface in a
frontal plane, the same image
will look like an ellipse.
