  2.     Certain illusions are again 
  3. predictable in terms of the 
  4. theory. If one views an 
  5. afterimage of an ellipse by 
  6. projecting it on a surface 
  7. slanted backward by, say, 45 
  8. degees, the elliptical image will 
  9. yield a circular shape percept, 
  10. as shown in the illustration to 
  11. the left. The object cannot look 
  12. like an ellipse because this 
  13. retinal-image shape is 
  14. interpreted on the basis of the 
  15. apparent slant in space of the 
  16. object producing it. This is 
  17. analogous to EmmertΓÇÖs law of 
  18. size perception. Of course when 
  19. projected on a surface in a 
  20. frontal plane, the same image 
  21. will look like an ellipse.
